Marilyn Monroe – SMASH and the winner is…..

NBC’s SMASH has won the hearts of critics and fans alike. On the next episode, the winner of the role of Marilyn will be determined.  Who do you think should be the chosen one?

Megan Hilty, who plays Ivy Lynn a broadway actress she’s ready for a role and tired of being in the chorus.  She competes against Katharine McPhee, who plays Karen Cartwright an unknown with a huge voice and heart. They both want the prized role of Marilyn Monroe in ‘Marilyn the Muscial.’

Both actresses have attributes similar to the real Marilyn.  While Katharine McPhee has the sweet innocent little girl quality that Marilyn carried through her life, Megan Hilty has the hard as nails true life personna of Marilyn behind the scenes.  Both women could easily be Marilyn but which one would be more appealing?  Which one would the audience want to represent their memory of a sex goddess?

The dumb blonde sexy icon was the greatest role that Marilyn ever played.  Marilyn Monroe was willing to do anything to get what she wanted.  She literally clawed and slept her way to the top of the Hollywood A list.  Megan Hilty’s character is apt to do the same thing.

In the show, director/choreographer Jack Davenport as Derek Wills, requestes a private call back for Karen.  She goes to his home at 10:00 p.m. and wows him, but keeps her morals.  Would Ivey Lynn have done the same thing? Or would she have slept with him in order to ensure the role went to her?

Essentially, what do Debra Messing, Julia Houston song writer for the musical, and Angelica Houston, Eileen Rand producer, want in the Marilyn role they are creating?  The musical has to portray Marilyn Monroe as the serious actress she wanted to be.  Under that cool exterior was an insecure woman who only wanted to be treated with respect and to be loved by the man she was with.

In our opinion, Karen Cartwright comes closer to the true Marilyn Monroe, one who was unsure of herself and vulnerable. More so than Ivy Lynn, who is cold and hard with the tough exterior to climb the rungs of the ladder to the top.

Who would you choose?

We would love to hear from you and hear what you would look for in a Marilyn Monroe.

  1. OK, at first glance I might have picked Megan Hilty as she “looks” more like Marilyn Monroe and is already polished. After reading your blog I am going to vote for Katharine McPhee because you have done so many years of research and know Marilyn Monroe so well. Of course, we have to realize the politics involved behind the scenes of a Broadway musical and we will have to see what those in control choose. I can’t wait!

  2. I am a huge Marilyn Monroe fan and have always been amazed at how she was “hard” in private yet looked and acted so innocent for roles and in the “public” eye to get where she wanted to be. That is a sign of a true woman in my eyes, meaning that Marilyn Monroe knew exactly what she wanted went after it yet she still had the vulnerability of a woman who was unsure of herself, but she didn’t give up. I would hope that the actress they choose could include the whole essence of Marilyn Monroe, which honestly is going to be hard as she was such a complicated yet simple person. Love your blog and am eagerly awaiting for your book to come out!

  3. I love the story and the writers are doing a great job of creating engaging characters-all but Megan Hilty. For some reason they are mssing the mark with her character, in my opinion. In last night’s episode, she was given the part of Marilyn, but it was unclear to me why she won it. Was it because she slept with the director? Was it because Katherine is too green? I can’t help but think that there must be a twist looming in the wings.

      • The writing has been so outstanding and I can’t imagine them wasting the wonderful opportunity of having Katherine grow from the experience of making her boyfriend unhappy-to experience the kind of terror Marilyn felt at making Joe D. unhappy. It would have been the kind of thing that would have helped Katherine gain the depth needed to play MM convincingly. Instead, it turned sappy when the boyfriend forgave her instantly and K. faced no consequences. Writers have to seize opportunities that show up spontaneously in the writing. I have faith that the writers will fix this disappointing turn in last night’s episode.
