Just keep reading, just keep reading….

Lately, we’ve been reading like crazy!! Believe it or not, K.R. and I are not pros at this book promotion stuff. And trust me when I say “that’s an understatement!” We have been working hard at learning the under side of the book writing world.

As an author, you work hard at developing a story line, character definitions, plot lines, and other details associated with writing a great story. Those things come easily, most days. That’s the fun side, or the up side of writing. The not so fun side, or the under side of writing, is promotion. We all have to do it. It doesn’t matter if you are an indie author or with one of the big 6, you still have to promote – yourself. You still have to develop an online platform, a fan base, a readership.

For some of you who are new to this too, we’ve come up with a few people who we recommend for you to glean knowledge from. These authors have walked this path before. We’ve listed their blogs/websites below for you to read for yourself. We recommend that you follow their blogs, so you can keep learning. And, not just these we have mentioned, but search out some mentors of your own to learn from. Remember: You’re never to old to learn, or too smart.

~~ Tonya Kappes is one of our favorites. She has great tips and advice on how to be a well-rounded author!! http://tonyakappes.blogspot.com/

~~ Jamie Lee Scott is another of our fave’s!! She also has great tips and advice for authors of books and scripts. http://www.jamieleescott.com/

~~ Kim Emerson of MasterKoda is our all time favorite person. She is truly an authors best friend. Her website will walk you through everything you need to get your book off the ground. She also has an excellent Facebook group called masterkoda. Ask to join today. You will find yourself in the best ‘support group’ for all things written. http://www.masterkoda.com

Well, as you can see, we have several favorites. These ladies just have so much to offer and they offer it freely. They have made it their goal to help others. They succeed at it too. For us, it’s not just about the practical business side of life. Being good at business is a must; however, being good at life is even more of a must!! And these ladies have both.

Along with reading and learning about your craft; having mentors that help you in your journey; you also need to set up some ‘be’ings for yourself. Ground rules if you will. Below, we share some things we’ve learned in life. Nothing new for sure, and they have been stated by many before us. However, they are worth repeating. We know, by experience, that they work for all aspects of life; both the personal and the business. And, when practiced regularly, they make for a rich, fulfilling life.

~ Be generous – always give more than you take.

~ Be mindful of how you talk – when you speak, make sure you are adding to another’s life, not taking away from it.

~ Be inspiring – lift others up, encourage them to seek their dreams.

~ Be ‘in the moment’ – take the extra minute, and pour yourself into another’s life.

~ Be curious – never stop wondering why or why not. Solutions abound if we will but act!

By being intentional about how you interact with others, you will naturally feed your success along with theirs. We encourage you to keep reading, to reach out, and ‘be’ for others.

Blessings to you all, K.R. and T.L.

Excellent Book Review from the Times Record News

Just wanted to share with you an awesome review we received from the Times Record News in Wichita Falls, Texas on our last book tour through the Panhandle. We’ve pasted the article here for your quick view. The actual web link is below the article. A huge thanks to Sharon Chance for taking the time to review “What She Knew.”

Monroe novel explores alternative conspiracy

Authors to sign book as Hastings

By Sharon Galligar Chance Special to the Times Record News

Friday, May 25, 2012

What if Marilyn Monroe really hadn’t died? What if she knew information that made her a target? What if her death was faked to save her life?

These questions are the basis for fiction novel “What She Knew,” by K.R. Hughes and T.L. Burns. The authors will sign copies of the book at from 1-4 p.m. Saturday at Hastings.

While some believe Monroe didn’t commit suicide but was actually murdered on that fateful night in August 1962, the question remains, what was the reason for her demise?

Hughes and Burns explore the idea that she had to be killed because of threatening information she knew. Was it Hollywood or the studios? Her involvement with the Rat Pack? Mobsters? Her association with the Kennedy’s?

The story opens in 1962, when forces were at work in a plot to kill America’s sex goddess and keep her from divulging information she may have picked up during her relationship with President John F. Kennedy. While mobster Sam Giancana played nice with Frank Sinatra, Frank was being equally nice to Kennedy’s brother-in-law, Peter Lawford, to enter the political circles Monroe had access to.

In this alternative conspiracy story, Monroe does not die by suicide but is saved by Peter Lawford and Bobby Kennedy, who replace the real Monroe with a body double so the world thinks she is dead. Badly beaten and bruised, she struggles to come to grips with her near-death experience and the realization that everything she worked for is gone.

With the country mourning their favorite sex goddess, it is a race against time to see if Monroe can save a country and the president.

Hughes is a native Texan with a degree in English. She has written historical fiction novels under the pen name Kymber Lee. Her writing partner, T.L. Burns, is from California and researched the information for “What She Knew.” They reside in Atlanta.

Burns and Hughes are working on the sequel to “What She Knew,” called, “What She Knew Too — The Saga Continues.”

“What She Knew” has been optioned for film rights by Gator Creek Artists Entertainment, with plans to turn the story into a feature film.

Please welcome our guest….

Karen Magill- Paranormal Author

Karen Magill is fascinated by history and the paranormal. She combines these passions with her love of writing and creates paranormal mystery novels that unite fiction with historical facts.

Forced to leave the workforce in 2000 by the onslaught of MS, Karen saw this as an opportunity to explore her lifelong desire to write. Initially she explored other areas of writing before deciding that her future lay with creating novels.

Karen lives in an eclectic area of Vancouver Canada and draws inspiration from the history and stories around her. Karen is a gifted photographer as well as a wonderful story-teller. She combines her love of history and photography on her blog. We always learn something new and see some of the most amazing pictures by following her blog. Her latest blog, Babes in The Woods, is fantastic. Great pictures and what a haunting story. It has captured our interest, that’s for sure.

~~Here are two of her works~~

Mystique Rising (Let Us Play, A Rock ‘n Roll Love Story in paperback)
In a bloody showdown during a Mystique concert, the government ended rock music. The members of Mystique disappeared – as many musicians before them had – without a trace.

This drives fans underground and they form the rebel group, Let Us Play Organization (LUPO). Presently Kaya More, who is the daughter of a slain LUPO founder, as well as a descendant of a member of Mystique, leads LUPO.

The gift of second sight aids Kaya as she leads the rebels from New York City to California to the Canadian Rockies. Once LUPO joins forces with other outlaws from around the world, the rebellion explodes and a showdown between the oppressors of music and fans is inevitable.

The Bond, A Paranormal Love Story
A woman, Laura Neill, in Vancouver is struck by a Chrysler Intrigue while crossing the street. At the same time in Toronto a car also strikes Julian Rule. Both people have an out-of-body experience and meet as they are floating. Their ethereal forms bond as one before separating – each taking a part of the other’s soul with them as they return to their bodies.

When the two people wake up, they remember the experience they shared and have memories of each other. The simultaneous accidents created a psychic bond. They are truly soul mates. Although Laura is haunted by visions of Julian that she cannot understand, she has decided to make dramatic changes in her life. One of them is becoming engaged to a member of England’s nobility that has recently appeared in her life. When he senses that she is in danger – a feeling that is confirmed by a psychic friend – Julian goes to Vancouver to come to her aid. With the help of a detective, Julian is able to prove that Laura’s fiancé is a con artist and a murderer. When Julian confronts the man, he and Laura are placed in imminent danger.

Karen has an awesome imagination and is very skilled at coming up with story lines very different from what is already available. If paranormal is your favorite, then you will certainly love Karen’s books.

Always, always, always believe in yourself

“This life is what you make it. No matter what, you’re going to mess up sometimes, it’s a universal truth. But the good part is you get to decide how you’re going to mess it up. Girls will be your friends – they’ll act like it anyway. But just remember, some come, some go. The ones that stay with you through everything – they’re your true best friends. Don’t let go of them. Also remember, sisters make the best friends in the world. As for lovers, well, they’ll come and go too. And babe, I hate to say it, most of them – actually pretty much all of them are going to break your heart, but you can’t give up because if you give up, you’ll never find your soul mate. You’ll never find that half who makes you whole and that goes for everything. Just because you fail once, doesn’t mean you’re gonna fail at everything. Keep trying, hold on, and always, always, always believe in yourself, because if you don’t, then who will, sweetie? So keep your head high, keep your chin up, and most importantly, keep smiling, because life’s a beautiful thing and there’s so much to smile about.”
― Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn said it best. Always, always, always believe in yourself. People will come and go, things will come and go, jobs will come and go, loves will come and go. The one thing that is constant? You. You will always be with you. Never give up. Never stop learning, loving, dreaming, striving, growing. If things are not as you want them, then work at how to make those things different. No matter what you do or who you are, you need to evaluate where you are and where you’re going.

For authors, it’s even more important that we recognize this and do it. It is so easy for a writer to get lost in the world they create; that doing what is necessary in the world in which they live can be the challenge.

~~Struggling with marketing/promoting your novel? Take a marketing class, attend an online seminar, or both. If you can afford it, we recommend http://www.masterkoda.com. MasterKoda is a great marketing guru who will help you take your first steps into what can be a vast and scary world.

~~Struggling with writers block? Take a sabbatical and read, read, read. Books that you are interested in is a good start; however, read other authors blogs, search the internet for articles on writer’s block, etc. Seek a solution. By taking time away from what you are struggling with you open your mind to free itself from the block. You’d be surprised what happens when you give yourself permission to rest.

~~Struggling with loneliness? (Yes, number one ailment of authors) Reach out, join a readers group, join online author groups, take a class (preferably one related to improving your craft.) You are the only one who can fix the lonely issue. You can be married, have kids and a busy life and still struggle with loneliness as a writer. Seek other like-minded individuals. We really like masterkoda on Facebook. This group is comprised of writers, editors, publishers, readers, and radio hosts. They are by far, the best group you will ever belong too. For inspiration, support, encouragement, advice, and more join masterkoda on Facebook today.

For all of us, it’s a matter of choice. Choose to be kind to you; to increase your knowledge every day; to love those around you with passion; and to always, always, always believe in yourself. Some days, you are all you have.

Blessing, K.R. and T.L.
